Alan Modra	dda2980f54	PR25569, PDP11 ld -s clobbers last data byte This patch fixes an ancient wart in aout support, in that text and data section sizes are rounded up for alignment rather that just the corresponding header sizes. Changing section sizes could conceivably result in buffer overflows if section contents were held in memory. Also, keeping the original section sizes allows this PR to be fixed nicely. bfd/ PR 25569 * aoutx.h (adjust_o_magic, adjust_z_magic, adjust_n_magic): Use "text", "data" and "bss" section pointer vars. Alan Modra	986f078366	bfd_size_type to size_t bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void ) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is Alan Modra	fd3619828e	bfd_section_* macros This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. Alan Modra	7a6e0d89bb	Don't use bfd_get_file_size in objdump Compressed debug sections can have uncompressed sizes that exceed the original file size, so we can't use bfd_get_file_size. objdump also used bfd_get_file_size to limit reloc section size, but I believe the underlying bug causing the PR22508 out of bounds buffer access was that we had an integer overflow when calculating the reloc buffer size. I've fixed that instead in most of the backends, som and vms-alpha being the exceptions. SOM and vmd-alpha have rather more serious bugs in their slurp_relocs routines that would need fixing first if we want to fuss about making them safe against fuzzed object files. The patch also fixes a number of other potential overflows by using the bfd_alloc2/malloc2/zalloc2 memory allocation functions. bfd/ * coffcode.h (buy_and_read): Delete unnecessary forward decl. Alan Modra	1a72702bb3	Return void from linker callbacks The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. Alan Modra	6346d5ca43	Fallout from recent bfd_reloc_outofrange changes Commit `ec93045b` and `cd21f5da` introduced a large number of tic4x and tic54x regressions, due to the new checks being wrong for targets with octets_per_byte != 1. To fix that I introduced a new bfd_get_section_limit_octets and performed the check on octets rather than byte adresses, reducing the number of bfd_octets_per_byte calls. bfd_octets_per_byte is rather expensive.. I then wondered why the same bfd_reloc_outofrange check added to bfd_perform_relocation wasn't also added to bfd_install_relocation. The two functions are virtually identical and ought to remain that way. However, adding the same check to bfd_install_relocation resulted in ld-elf "FAIL Link eh-group.o to eh-group" on many ELF targets, including x64_64-linux. The reason being that eh-group.o has NONE relocs at the end of a section, and most targets give NONE relocs a non-zero size. So if we are to keep the new outofrange check it appears that NONE relocs must have a zero size. * bfd-in.h (bfd_get_section_limit_octets): New define, extracted from.. (bfd_get_section_limit): ..here. * reloc.c (bfd_perform_relocation): Correct bfd_reloc_outofrange check. Alan Modra	13e570f80c	Fix LTO vs. COFF archives Avoid scan of symbols on objects in coff archives since we don't need to do anything special with common symbols. The scan is quite useless, and breaks LTO due to slim LTO objects not having symbols available until after the plugin has claimed them. Instead we can add objects based on their archive symbol map. Also, rip out the archive symbol hash table used by the generic linker. Using a hash breaks one feature of unix archive linking; The first object file in an archive defining any given symbol should be the object extracted to satisfy that symbol. What's more a hash isn't much faster except in pathological cases where object file ordering causes many scans of the archive. See the comment which I'm removing from elf_link_add_archive_symbols. Finally, tidy elflink.c archive handling a little.
